How to change brake pads

A practical walkthrough of replacing front brake pads safely at home.

Before you start Check the pad thickness. Most manufacturers recommend replacement below 3 mm of friction material.

Tools - Jack and axle stands - Wheel brace - Caliper piston tool - Torque wrench

Steps 1. Loosen the wheel bolts, raise the car and support it on axle stands. 2. Remove the wheel and the caliper guide bolts. 3. Lift the caliper away and support it — never let it hang on the brake hose. 4. Remove old pads and clean the carrier. 5. Push the piston back slowly. 6. Fit the new pads and any wear sensor. 7. Refit the caliper and torque the bolts to the manufacturer figure. 8. Pump the brake pedal before driving and bed the pads in gently.
